At the Milliner's, painted by Edgar Degas around 1882, is one of the most intimate and psychologically complex works of the artist's mature career. Now in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this pastel on paper captures a woman trying on a hat in a Parisian millinery shop, rendered with the oblique compositional intelligence and acute social observation that define Degas's vision of modern life.
The scene belongs to a celebrated series of millinery subjects Degas pursued throughout the 1880s — a world almost entirely feminine, inhabited by shopgirls, customers, and the silent transactions of fashion and identity that defined bourgeois Parisian femininity. Unlike his ballet compositions, where figures are observed from a voyeuristic distance, At the Milliner's places the viewer inside the intimate space of the shop, close enough to feel the studied concentration of the woman as she assesses her reflection. Degas's handling of pastel here is extraordinary — the medium applied in multiple layers of hatching and blending that create a surface of extraordinary luminosity and tactile richness.
The composition is radically cropped, the spatial relationships compressed and ambiguous in a manner that owes much to Japanese woodblock prints and the emerging art of photography. It is a masterwork of observation, technique, and modern sensibility — and one of the finest pastels in any American museum collection.
