Painted between 1883 and 1884, Madame X stands as one of John Singer Sargent's most celebrated and controversial masterworks. The subject is Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, an American-born Parisian socialite renowned for her striking beauty and unconventional allure. Sargent rendered her in a daring off-the-shoulder black gown, her alabaster skin contrasting dramatically against the dark, austere background — a composition of breathtaking tension and elegance.
When first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1884, the portrait caused a public scandal. Critics found the pose too provocative, the exposed décolletage unseemly. Sargent, deeply wounded by the reception, later repainted the fallen strap to its present upright position. Despite the controversy, the work never lost its commanding power.
Now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Madame X is widely regarded as a pinnacle of late 19th-century portraiture — a bold study in psychological presence, technical virtuosity, and social defiance. It remains a timeless icon of feminine confidence and painterly mastery.
