Gerard David, one of the last great masters of the Flemish Primitive tradition, painted this intimate devotional work around 1510–15, during the final flourishing of the Bruges school. Executed in oil on wood, the panel displays David's characteristic refinement: luminous flesh tones, meticulous detail in fabric and foliage, and a serene emotional gravity that invites quiet contemplation.
The composition centers on the Virgin and Child, a subject at the heart of Northern Renaissance devotional painting. Four angels attend the scene, their presence elevating the image from domestic tenderness to celestial vision — a hallmark of David's ability to blend earthly intimacy with sacred transcendence. The soft modeling of forms and jewel-like palette reflect his mastery of Flemish oil technique inherited from Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling.
This work is part of the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where it stands as a testament to the enduring spiritual and aesthetic power of early Netherlandish painting.
This premium stretched canvas reproduction is printed on museum-quality matte canvas and hand-wrapped around a 0.75-inch solid wood frame with a classic gallery wrap finish — ready to hang and built to last for generations.
