The Feast of Acheloüs, painted around 1615 by Peter Paul Rubens in collaboration with Jan Brueghel the Elder, depicts the river god Acheloüs entertaining the hero Theseus and his companions with a mythological tale from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The unusual collaboration reflects a common practice among Antwerp's leading masters: Rubens designed and painted the figures, while Brueghel, renowned for his botanical precision and gift for landscape and still life, rendered the lush surrounding still life and setting.
The result is a work of extraordinary richness, combining Rubens's dynamic, fleshy figures with Brueghel's meticulously observed fruit, flora, and vessels, each artist's distinct hand visible within a single, harmonious composition. This kind of collaborative painting was highly prized by discerning collectors of the period, who valued the opportunity to own works bearing the signature talents of two celebrated masters at once.
Held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this museum-quality stretched canvas reproduction is printed on premium matte canvas and hand-wrapped around a solid 0.75-inch gallery wrap frame — ready to hang and built to last.
