Oleanders, painted in August 1888 during Vincent van Gogh's extraordinarily productive period in Arles, is a radiant celebration of the sun-drenched Mediterranean flora that captivated him throughout his time in the South of France. The canvas presents a lush bouquet of pink oleander blossoms arranged in an earthenware pot, their vivid petals rendered with van Gogh's characteristic energetic brushwork and bold, unmodulated colour.
Van Gogh himself wrote enthusiastically about oleanders in his letters to his brother Theo, admiring their exuberant vitality and symbolic resonance. Notably, a copy of Émile Zola's novel La Joie de vivre rests beside the vase, lending the composition a literary and personal dimension that speaks to the artist's deep engagement with contemporary culture and ideas.
The painting exemplifies the Post-Impressionist mastery van Gogh achieved at Arles — a synthesis of intense colour, expressive texture, and emotional directness. Today held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this work remains one of the most joyful and luminous floral compositions of the nineteenth century.
