Ia Orana Maria (Hail Mary), painted by Paul Gauguin in 1891 during his first stay in Tahiti, reimagines the Christian Annunciation through the lens of Polynesian life and landscape. The Virgin Mary and Christ Child appear as Tahitian figures, their golden-brown skin and simple wrap garments set against a lush tropical grove, while an angel gestures toward them from among the trees.
Gauguin considered this his finest Tahitian work, fusing Catholic iconography with the indigenous customs and natural surroundings he encountered upon his arrival in the South Seas. The flattened forms, bold outlines, and non-naturalistic color reflect his mature Symbolist style and his deliberate rejection of Western academic convention, seeking instead a primal, spiritually charged vision of humanity untouched by modern civilization.
Held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this museum-quality stretched canvas reproduction is printed on premium matte canvas and hand-wrapped around a solid 0.75-inch gallery wrap frame — ready to hang and built to last.
