The Lamentation, painted in 1593 by Scipione Pulzone (called Il Gaetano), is a monumental, densely populated meditation on grief following the Deposition — the ladders used to bring Christ down from the cross still visible against the darkening sky. The dead Christ, laid across his mother's lap, is surrounded by a full company of mourners: the Magdalene at his feet, Saint John supporting the Virgin, and Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus standing witness with the crown of thorns and burial cloth in hand.
Pulzone was among the most sought-after painters in Counter-Reformation Rome, prized for a devotional clarity that stripped away Mannerist artifice in favor of direct, legible emotion — precisely the kind of image the Catholic Church's reformers wanted to encourage after the Council of Trent. Every gesture and glance in this crowded composition is calibrated to draw the viewer into shared mourning.
