Madame Bergeret de Frouville as Diana, painted in 1756 by Jean-Marc Nattier, presents its sitter in the fashionable guise of the huntress goddess Diana, complete with crescent moon in her hair and the assured, cool elegance that made Nattier the most sought-after portraitist of French aristocratic women at Louis XV's court. Costuming society sitters as mythological figures was a specialty Nattier had all but invented, flattering his patrons with divine associations while showing off his silvery, luminous handling of skin and fabric.
By 1756 Nattier had spent decades perfecting this formula, and this portrait exemplifies the cool, refined charm that made him indispensable to Versailles society — a style that would soon fall out of fashion as Neoclassicism swept away Rococo allegory, but which at its height defined how the French aristocracy wished to be remembered.
