Dancers, Pink and Green, painted around 1890 by Edgar Degas, captures a cluster of ballerinas waiting in the wings, caught not in performance but in the unglamorous, fidgety moments of preparation Degas returned to obsessively throughout his career. Seen from an oblique, cropped angle reminiscent of photography and Japanese prints, the dancers dissolve into a haze of tulle rendered in shimmering pinks and acid greens.
Degas was never interested in ballet as spectacle; he was interested in the backstage machinery of it — the stretching, adjusting, and waiting that made up most of a dancer's working life. The unconventional cropping and elevated vantage point, borrowed from the compositional daring of Japanese woodblock prints then flooding into Paris, were part of what made his ballet pictures feel so radically modern.
