The Rebuke of Adam and Eve, painted in 1740 by the French master Charles Joseph Natoire, depicts the dramatic moment from the Book of Genesis when God the Father, borne aloft by cherubim, descends to confront Adam and Eve after their fall from grace. Adam gestures toward Eve in blame, while Eve in turn points to the serpent, establishing the narrative chain of accusation that would echo through centuries of Western art and theology.
Natoire, a leading exponent of the French Rococo and a former director of the French Academy in Rome, executed this intimate scene in oil on copper — a refined support favored for small-scale devotional and mythological works prized for their jewel-like finish. The luminous palette, graceful figures, and the fig tree rendered in the Italian tradition rather than the Northern European apple reveal Natoire's deep engagement with Italian precedent, particularly Domenichino's celebrated treatment of the same subject.
Held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this museum-quality stretched canvas reproduction is printed on premium matte canvas and hand-wrapped around a solid 0.75-inch gallery wrap frame — ready to hang and built to last.
