The Annunciation (ca. 1585) is the work of Peter Candid (Pieter de Witte, Pietro Candido) (Netherlandish, Bruges ca. 1548–1628 Munich). A refined example of Late Mannerism, it depicts the Archangel Gabriel kneeling before the Virgin as the dove of the Holy Spirit descends in radiant light. Executed in oil on wood, the original is preserved in the celebrated collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Peter Candid — born in Flanders, trained in Italy, and later court painter in Munich — fused Florentine grace with Northern precision. The elongated, elegant figures, luminous palette of rose and lilac, and serene devotional atmosphere epitomize the sophisticated Mannerist style prized across the courts of late sixteenth-century Europe.
