Telemachus and the Nymphs of Calypso, painted in 1782 by the celebrated Swiss-Austrian Neoclassical master Angelica Kauffmann, stands as a luminous testament to the era's fascination with classical antiquity and moral virtue. Drawing from Homer's Odyssey and François Fénelon's enormously popular novel Télémaque (1699), the composition depicts the young hero Telemachus surrounded by the enchanting nymphs of the island of Ogygia — a scene charged with themes of temptation, duty, and the hero's steadfast pursuit of his father Odysseus.
Kauffmann's refined draughtsmanship and delicate, harmonious palette reflect the Neoclassical ideals she championed throughout her distinguished career. As one of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, she was a pioneering figure in European painting. The figures are rendered with sculptural elegance and tender humanity, their soft draperies and graceful gestures evoking ancient bas-relief while retaining an intimate warmth. The landscape setting — suffused with golden light — further anchors the narrative in an idealized Arcadian world.
This museum-quality stretched canvas reproduction is printed on premium matte canvas and hand-wrapped around a sturdy 0.75-inch wooden frame with a classic gallery wrap finish — ready to display and built to endure, bringing the grandeur of the Met's European Paintings collection into your home.
